What a hospitality POS must do after “send”

A restaurant POS is an operational router. It may receive walk-in, phone, table and online orders; carry menu choices and modifiers; coordinate production; accept payment; control protected actions; and leave a record that managers can reconcile later.

The difference: Zwift POS starts before the till and ends after the shift

Zwift frames POS as part of Arena, the venue-facing operational layer. Publicly documented workflows include walk-in, phone, configured table and online orders; a visual menu; product modifiers; customer context; fulfilment; kitchen displays; restaurant dockets and receipt printing; supported payment terminals; driver assignment and dispatch; and protected actions around settings and refunds.

That matters because the same business can also use a venue-specific branded storefront and a browser-based Business Portal across orders, customers, menu, campaigns, delivery, reports, finance and support. What “offline” should actually mean

Offline claims are easy to overread. A POS may continue taking some local orders while payment authorisation, cloud menu updates, maps, delivery services, messaging or multi-location reporting remain dependent on connectivity. Recovery behaviour matters too: which transactions queue, which do not, and what staff see when the connection returns?

Zwift describes Arena as having an offline-capable local operational data layer: supported information may remain available during interrupted synchronisation, while external payments, maps and cloud services still require their relevant connection. Lightspeed, Square, Toast and Oolio/OrderMate also publish offline or on-premise continuity claims. No responsible buyer should award “most reliable” from that label alone.

Run a controlled continuity drill in the demo

  1. Start an in-store and online order.
  2. Interrupt the venue connection at an agreed point.
  3. Observe order entry, kitchen output, payment, customer status and staff warnings.
  4. Restore the connection and inspect reconciliation.
  5. Write down which external services behaved differently and why.

A 20-minute POS demo script

  1. Build the ugly product. Half-half, extras, removed ingredients, allergen context and a price-changing option.
  2. Enter it four ways. Walk-in, phone, table and online where supported.
  3. Send it to production. Check KDS, printer routing, timing and docket readability.
  4. Change the service state. Sell out an item, add a surcharge, alter a trading window and protect the action.
  5. Handle the exception. Change fulfilment, partially refund, move a delivery and find the audit trail.
  6. Close the loop. Locate the order, payment, settlement, customer context and manager report later.

If the vendor cannot demonstrate one realistic service sequence, another hundred feature ticks will not make the workflow clearer.

Bring the ugliest item on your menu.
